The purpose of this book is to look at the basic essentials of bidding in Bridge using the Standard American, 5-card major system. It will be enough to get you going, but more details of bidding conventions are covered in other publications

"The whole point of bidding for a contract is to score points. But not all contracts score enough points to make a game contract in one hit. The points may be distributed reasonably evenly between all four players and you and your partner may not have hands which are strong enough for game.

You can make a rule-of-thumb judgement as to how strong a contract you can bid by combining your High Card Points with those of your partner."
